Mechanical Landscapes is a compilation of some of the finest pictures from theviewfromthenorth.org, and is a journey round the industrial north in black and white photographs. It is a timely exploration of the changing industrial landscape in the first decade of the 21st century, witnessing not only the ongoing decline of British industry, but also the sudden global recession which ended the decade.
Yet it is the technology and structures which are a legacy of the previous two centuries which can be found littering the urban and rural landscape, from vast steelworks to the Victorian mills and bleachworks, a million miles away from the modern financial instititutions in the luxury air conditioned offices of the Square Mile.
This is not an exhaustive study of the subject, rather a work in progress of that showcases the highlights of the first five years, and is but a mere snapshot. Focussing primarily on Lancashire, Yorkshire and North Wales with excursions into Scotland, Lincolnshire, Scotland, and the East Midlands, and visits mines, quarries, paper mills, textile mills, engineering works, and other sites that have shaped the landscape and communities of 'The North'. But it is not just the external topographical landscape, it is also the internal landscape. As sites shut down, decay sets in, and metal thieves strike, leaving temporary access for the observant and the informed, and allowing an opportunity to glimpse into a sometimes dangerous world hidden from the public.
The book contains 160 pages and as an introductory launch offer, I am selling the books at cost price! So the paperback start at £25.95, £31.95 for the hardback and £33.95 for the imagewrap. Premium paper is also highly recommended, but prices will soon be increasing!
