Preston
These pictures were taken on Preston Docks, late one November.
The docks were in use for less than a hundred years, closing in 1981. They were never a commercial success, despite pioneering the use of Roll On - Roll Off Ferries. One of the biggst problems was the Ribble was continually silting up, and in the end the ongoing cost of dredging became prohibitive. The docklands have been redeveloped, with only one of the original buildings left, converted to luxury apartments. The dock itself is partly used as a Marina, but is largely unused. The annual Maritime Festival is a joke!
