The mill was water powered at first. The Griffe mill damstones (i.e. the weir at the head of the goit) is (are?) a few hundred yards upstream of the mill at a sharp bend in the stream. The goit is clearly traceable from there to the mill pond. The wheel pit is still clearly visible near the end of the mill buildings - not far from the chimney. The wheel was at some time replaced by a water turbine. Some steam power was added about 1895 but water power was used to the end. A gas engine had been put in by 1923. It’s unusual to be able to look down on one from the ground though, but the local topography was on my side here. I’ve never really had the chance to study them close up before, and I’d never realised that slates were used. I’d never given much thought to it in all honesty, but given its near universal use as a roofing material in Victorian times, it seems obvious really with hindsight. There’s something symbolic about the repetitive nature of the repeating pattern. Repetition is what mass production is all about, and the textile industry was one of the first proponents of repeatable, mass production. That is A machine the oldest paper machine on the site. It is a Paper Machine. Fletchers produced two main types of paper “wood” or “Rag”. Wood papers were a mix of hardwood and softwood mixed with chalk and Rag was a mixture of Hemp or Flax mixed with softwood and chalk. Rag gets its name from a time when rags were processed to produce the paper. The wood was purchased already partially processed in bale form. The bales were pulped by the pulpers part of the beating department. The pulp was delivered to the machine, mixed with chalk, chemicals to aid burning (usually mixed citrates) and then onto the machine in a liquid state. The liquid paper then went through a series of presses and dryers before being delivered to the reel end. This did not prove successful, and was soon taken out. The system was installed at a few more collieries up to the 1930s, but did not enjoy widespread use. It took the reconstruction programme of the NCB in the 1950s and 1960s to encourage further adoption. Clipstone was one of the first post war examples of this system, but surprisingly, here the NCB went for ground based winders, rather than the by now more usual system of winders installed in towers over the shafts. This of course, required the use of headframes, and the ones at Clipstone use pulley wheels or 'sheaves' located one above the other, designed specifically for Koepe winding, rather than the more normal way of sheaves next to each other. The winder house contained the two electrically driven Koepe winders, and two motor generator sets to convert the public AC supply to DC. This configuration pretty much remained as this until closure in 2003. https://www.theviewfromthenorth.org/acre-mill https://images.on-this.website/4565_209063368577585dd83a9f.jpgAcre Mill Acre mill was built in second quarter of 19th century and was extended a number of times, part of the mill was dated 1877. At the time of listing in 1968 the building was in use as a carpet factory and warehouse. The buildings were of one, two and three storeys and were built of coursed dressed sandstone with some random rubble, slate and sheet roofs. The site consisted of a series of interconnected buildings mostly aligned on an east-west axis, principally weaving sheds and warehouses, built beside River Irwell. Acre Mill (Woollen and Cotton) is named on the Ordnance Survey 1849 first edition 1:10,560 map, which shows the mill as a large factory block on the south bank of the River Irwell. The map also depicts a gasometer immediately adjacent to the mill, and a reservoir. In 1874, a fire in a two-storey warehouse caused damage estimated at £600. Acre Mill (Woollen) is named on the Ordnance Survey 1893 first edition 1:2500 map, which shows the mill to have expanded to the west relative to the footprint shown on the earlier mapping. In 1896, a new vitriol shed was added to the site and, in 1898, extensive alterations including the installation of a new engine and boiler, and a new roof on the dye house. Richard Hargreaves & Sons are listed as cotton waste spinners and manufacturers at Acre Mill, Stacksteads, Bacup, in a directory of 1905. Selective colouring is a technique that was popular a few years ago, and this is one of the few pictures I’ve tried it on where it works. East front has a rusticated ashlar, ground floor front with 3 round arched openings, these are all now blocked. Above 3 boarded windows with flush ashlar lintels. The south-east corner is chamfered. The south front has 3 windows on the upper floor and to the right a doorway, formerly reached by an external stair. The integral chimney rises from the west wall. It has a square base with ashlar coping, supporting a tall circular stack with a rolled base and a truncated top. Interior: retains its original cast iron roof trusses, purlins and common rafters. Steel and iron making on Teesside goes back 160 years, but despite being a relatively modern plant, the sudden cancellation of the contract to buy its steel meant that Corus took the decision to mothball the blast furnace at Redcar. At the time of writing, Corus had agreed to sell the plant to a Thai company, but the deal was still some way off being signed, sealed and delivered. Taken from their website (www.ribblesteam.org.uk): The LMS Ivatt Class 2 2-6-0 is a class of steam locomotive designed for mixed traffic. A total of 218 were built between 1946 and 1953, mostly at Crewe. The LMS classified them 2F, BR 2MT. 46441 was built at Crewe in April 1950, and allocated to Lancaster, Green Ayre. it's duties included the Lake Windermere cruise, a passenger train from Morecambe to Lakeside, via Ulverston hauling the District Engineer's saloon. It's last general repair was at Crewe works in 1964. These locomotives were the cheapest to operate on BR, as 16s 6d a mile in the mid-1960's - the same as a DMU, which replaced them. When Green Ayre closed, the loco moved to Carnforth, where it was saved from the scrapman by Dr Peter Beet in April 1967. Of the other two, one is still partially occupied but is a bit of a ruin to be honest and will eventually be demolished, while the other is empty and will be renovated. Other bits have already been demolished due to their poor condition but others will follow suit but some buildings such as the mill offices will be preserved. It was a grim December day when I went to photograph them, with the last remnants of the brief snow and ice we had on some of the pavements in the Wigan area.
