Dunaskin Brickworks 15

The abandoned Dunaskin Brickworks in Ayrshire, Scotland
Industrial locomotives. I didn't go any closer as the Railway people were on site doing maintenance, and my experience with people on heritage railways is that they are well meaning but overly H & S conscious and won't let you anywhere near anything without being escorted. I'll do the railway stuff next time.

Photo comment By JOHN Stevenson: my mum Elizabeth Chalmers was born and brought up in Dunaskin, moved to Waterside,Patna, her dad n grandad worked at the brickworks and the pits, I was christened in Waterside church 1952,is there anything left of the original villages, John Stevenson.
Photo comment By Keith Miller: yes, there was activity on this part of the site, but I didn't share your resevations and I wandered down to the railway sidings withjout challenges. Several old locos (shunters) and loads of classic old school rolling stock in various states of decrepitude. Hope they eventually manage to restore these but there are so many units awaiting work that it could take centuries! It's very wierd - the site is signed on the main road but the entrance is securely gated and padlocked up. The message is "buzz off - not welcome here"..... but walk 50 m beyond the main gate and the security boundary fence has been opened and a well used path leads right into the heart of the site. Very strange and walking around I had the constant feeling that I was intruding into some forbidden worksite. Hope the H+S mindset doesn't ruin it for responsible public viewing this casually and carefully.
Photo comment By David Bryden: Showing this to my father William Bryden, 96yrs old born in 1 Long Row Dunaskin, worked in Brickworks 1936-1938. Had trouble recognising some of the pictures, he did recognise the brick kilns area. Had visited the Heritage Centre while it was operating. Nice to look at the old works.. The man in charge of the youngsters at the Brickworks was Jim Dunwoodie. Until last year, dad had been in regular contact with Willie Dunn, former school friend who had worked in the Brickworks office as Paymaster. Keep the information flowing please.
