Whitelands Mill No.2, Ashton-under-Lyne
Whitelands Mill, Ashton-under-Lyne. Built in 1883, when what is now known as Tameside was awash with mills. To be fair, there's a few left, maybe 10 or so within a mile radius, but nothing like the density there was in 1883. The mill is a little tatty but is fully occupied by a plastics manufacturer who sounded busy at work on the Saturday morning of my stroll.

By Rod Lister: I spent a few happy years here in the 1970's It belonged then to Sterling Moulding Materials, who owned several other Tameside mills. It was derelict when we moved in and built a big plant for making the sort of plastic that ends up as eg toilet seats. I ended up as plant manager making the white stuff. Nobody from any other mill was allowed in for obvious reasons. Is the enormous corrugated iron clad lift still in the yard? I was told it was built to carry half a Halifax wing when it was a wartime shadow factory. My mate installed his office desk and chair in it so that instead of saying "come to my office" he could bring his office to me.
